ECONOMICS VIDEOCASSETTES

I have prepared several videocassettes for this class, and I am in the process of taping more in the near future. These videocassettes cover certain key concepts and topics throughout the course which are considered important to your understanding of economics. The cassettes were made with the student in mind, and therefore, will not only enhance your understanding (and therefore enjoyment) of the material but will quite probably improve your test scores as well. The use of these videocassettes is strictly voluntary.

The videocassettes are housed in the Instructional Media Center, which is located in the basement of the Learning Resources Center. The IMC's hours are 8:00am-4:30pm Monday through Friday.

What can the videocassettes do for you? Students who have used the videocassettes in the past say that they:

• Help in organizing class notes
• Fill in the "gaps" in class notes
• Summarize important points
• Correct wrong statements or graphs written by students during lectures
• Allow the material to "sink in" since they can see and hear the material presented a second time (or third time, etc.)
• Serve as a review before each test
• Let the student proceed at their own pace since they can stop the tape, back up, etc.
• Reinforce basic ideas presented in the book and in the class
• Put everything together and in perspective
• Help students catch up after a long absence from class (due to illness, hospitalization, etc.)
• Aid in retention of difficult material
• Clear up questions that arise later, especially for those students "too shy" to ask many questions in class

FINAL COMMENTS:

1. The tapes are on specific topics. They do not cover all the material in the course, nor are they a substitute for sixteen weeks of classroom learning.

2. A survey of the students who did not take advantage of this learning tool consistently revealed two comments. First, they did not "have enough time" between work and other curses to view the videocassettes. Second, almost all of them said that the videocassettes would have helped them understand the material if they had used them.
