Dr. James M. Okapal
Assistant Professor of Philosophy -
Jim's teaching and research interests are in Theoretical
and Applied Ethics. He is primarily interested in developing a robust theory
of normative pluralism that can meet objections concerning the ability of such theories to
develop a connected theory of practical reason. The ultimate goal is for most ethical situations to be
decidable, and yet have the theory countenance normative dilemmas. Furthermore, Jim is interested in developing a
program where this theory can be used to guide policy making in medicine, the environment, business, and other professional areas.
Jim has taught course including Ethical Theory, Bioethics, Business Ethics, Contemporary Moral Problems, Formal Logic, Human Nature, Globalization, The Individual and Society, and several different Introduction to Philosophy courses.
In the future, he hopes to teach upper level courses on Meta-Ethical issues such as Moral Realism, Moral Epistemology, Moral Pluralism, and Decision and Game Theory, as well as courses in Social and Political Theory, Philosophy of Science, and the History of Philosophy.
For more information on Jim and the courses he is currently teaching, go to his
personal home page.
