Weddings in Russia
Russians
are not unlike other peoples of the world. The age-old
process of joining a male
and female to produce a new
generation has occurred with all living organisms on the Earth
and since the beginning of time.
Traditional Russian wedding.
Orthodox wedding.
Prior to "the revolution" of 1917 virtually all marriages were conducted in the local Orthodox church. Following the guidance of Karl Marx, the leaders of the socialist government after 1917 highly discouraged marriage in a church. The accepted marriage of the new government was a civil marriage. Marriage continues in Russia today. It is unclear if the marriages presented below were done in a church or ? It was also interesting to note that for the "wedding receptions" only young people were visible. Where were the parents? What are the similarities of a Russian and a North American wedding? {see below} Demographers see a major problem that European Russia has today and even more so in the future. The problem is the declining birth rate in European Russia that has essentially created a negative population growth rate. It is believed that because Russia has had difficult economic times young couples are delaying having children. Following are three photos that show a very moving tradition throughout Russia. The early years of the 1940's were very difficult for Russia: Nazi invasion. In every city, town and village there is a monument to the fallen heroes of the "Great War." By tradition today after the marriage the young couple will visit the military monument and offer flowers to Mother Russia. This contemporary custom may be tied to the Orthodox custom of asking the Virgin Mary to make the marriage successful and fruitful. The next frames show the visitation of a newly married couple to the Russian Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This perpetual flame is just out side of the Kremlin Wall. When the newly wed couple are allowed to enter the area of the Tomb, the audience -- almost on command -- becomes silent. A very somber viewing experience. Wedding Ring Style
