World Geography
 Who is Aschermann?

Catalog Description:

A systematic and regional analysis of the world's diverse cultural realms emphasizing the five themes of geography location, place, interaction of people and the physical environment, movement and region.

Geography 100 is a general studies course that will introduce you to the unique regions of the world.  It is designed to provide background information essential to an understanding of the diverse cultural and physical characteristics that define those regions.  As indicated by the official MWSC catalog description listed above, the course objectives are derived from the five themes of geography and the skill and knowledge areas for General Studies courses as set forth by the State of Missouri.

The five themes were written in 1984 by the Joint Committee on Geographic Education of the National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE) and the Association of American Geographers (AAG).

The Important Things as We Get Started......
Expectations
Class Attendance:  MWSC policy.  Regular class attendance is considered an essential part of the student's educational experiences and a requirement for adequate evaluation of student academic progress.  Each instructor will determine and make known to the class the requirements for attendance.  When an announced examination falls on the day a student is absent, instructors are not required to give a make-up test.  Consideration will be given to students in the case of genuine illness, emergency, or when acting as a representative of MWSC.  It shall be the responsibility of the student to notify the instructor prior to the absence and, if possible, meet the instructor upon the student's return to discuss material missed.  If you will miss class, make a telephone call to 816-271-4300 prior to 10:15 AM.
TRANSLATION:  You, your parents, your Uncle Sam or some other benefactor has paid cash money for you to enroll in Geography 100.  Simply--- if you are not in class, you or someone is not getting their money's worth!  If you miss three class sessions it is assumed that you have a lack of interest, motivation, committment or whatever to continue in the class.  It will be recommended that you drop the course.  In 30 years I have missed five days of classes---  Plan your schedule so that you arrive on time each day and attend class the entire session.
Eating and Drinking during class:  Not acceptable.
Chatter:  So there will not be any misunderstanding--- when the instructor is talking your responsibility is to listen and not chatter with someone sitting adjacent to you.
How do I get my grade?
First, attend class on a regular basis.  There is a high correlation between class attendance and successful completion of of a campus course.  It is anticipated that there will be three major exams.  Exam questions will be multiple choice and some will include material discussed/presented in class.  Exam questions may come from lectures, assigned hard readings, assigned electronic readings, vidoes and other readings.  The proposed calendar lists the date for each GeoTutor quiz and short chapter quiz.   A quiz cannot be "made up."   The following grading scale will be used:
      • A=100-92% of total possible points
      • B=91-82% of total possible points
      • C=81-70% of total possible points
      • D=69-65% of total possible points
      • F=64% or lower.   Note:  if you are an intended elementary education major you will need a grade of "C" or higher to complete your major requirements.

It is anticipated at there will be opportunities for extra-credit points which sometimes are very useful to have at the end of the semester.

Students with Disabilities   Definition:  those people who, by birth, illness or
accident do not have the use of one or more of life's functions; those in wheel chairs, dyslexia,
poor dexterity, etc.  Any student in his course who has a disability that prevents the fullest
expression of abilities should contact the following person who will then contact the instructor.
